World Aquatic Ecosystem (WAE) started from a hobby in 2003. Realizing the commercial potential of the fresh water plants or aquatic plants drove the founders to turn it into business venture. The owners acquired 7 acres of land in Balik Pulau, Penang and converted it into a farm to cultivate and grow aquatic plants conventionally. Presently, WAE has 200 ponds with more than 90 species of aquatic plants valued at RM1.0 million
Currently, WAE holds 60% market shares of aquatic plants in Penang. With the present stock WAE is targeting RM3000.00 local sales daily.
To achieve the sales target, an expansion program was set in place in late 2007. With new investor the partnership company changed to Sendirian Berhad (Limited Company). Mr. Chuah Teong Kooi, an aquaculture specialist with more than 30 years working experience is the company’s Business Advisor.
In 2008, WAE has participated in the incubator program of the Fisheries Department of Malaysia for three years to conduct research and development on tissue culture of aquatic plants.
In the year 2009, WAE has been awarded Bionexus status.
In 2010, WAE secured a commercialization grant from Malaysia Biotech Corporation Sdn. Bhd. for business expansion. A 6000 square feet laboratory has been set up complete with machinery and equipment for R&D and full commercialization.
